Defining Your Own Style

Wed Apr 16, 2008, 5:02 AM
In a world full of copycats and those that create their designs based off of other artists, I'll admit that even I have looked at other artists' work and tried to emulate them. Not copy mind you. My work is my own but I've learned from their art. But when it comes down to it it's not my art style that I am designing when I do that. It's those artists. How do you keep yourself from doing the same? How did you come up with your own style? How do you separate yourself from the masses to create and innovate?

The reason I ask this is because, it wasn't until this year that I've gotten back in touch with my truly artistic side. I was stuck in the world of graphic design that involved application design, so you can all imagine how much artistic creativity that involves, or should I say how little. I want to learn again. I'm re-invigorated and I want to develop my own style, so I ask this to see if others artists can put in a few words of advice. I want to be able to come up with a new way to design that when someone sees that style, they would know it right off the bat without even knowing for sure who designed it. I want them to say, he/she was influenced by OMD if it wasn't I who designed that particular artwork. You know kinda like Warhol, or Lichtenstein and so many other artists of the past and present. It's not the fame that this is about, it's about the innovation.

With that being said, how were you inspired to come up with your unique style?

Thanks ahead of time.

I myself have a poor imagination and my artistic creativity is sometimes crap..I base my style on what I see here, and I mix alot of styles I see everywhere..I guess that's my style...mixing styles into my own...you can see my gallery every design is different but you can see similarity in them still....

I think you have your own style, very graphical and you should pursue that into soemthing more...

ya know...its especially hard for me cause as you can tell from my gallery, im not limited to JUST photomanips, or JUST 3d work...i can do all sorts of things, but i do what i like to do most..and thats abstracts, with beautiful women...its fun, and people seem to like it....i guess thats my style

the only real advice i could give is try to incorporate, the things that you like, with things you can do...and see where it goes, it doesn't hurt to get inspiration from others, as i have done many a time. and like you said inspiration is far from stealing.

think about what you enjoy, think about your strongest skills/areas you want to improve and experiment!

In this world... there is art in everything around us... a person can run through a park and hear nature's style of abstract and beauty... a man can walk throught a park and glance in the eyes of a child and within the 3 seconds it takes to look away, see a beauty that he had never experienced... to sum what I am saying... Your style comes from your life..What you see, what you hear and how you live... A Wiseman Once said "The Art We Make Is The Art We Live."
I was thinking about the same for some time, not even doing own works because before I even started, I rejected the newborn idea as something that had been there already, seen too often, or whatever. By wanting to be truly innovative and unique, I ended up not doing nothing at all. Or not much. I was too critical with myself. Now I think that is just the wrong way, that a very own and unique style will develop over the years, and comes from doing a lot of stuff, and with time it will eventually develop into something really unique and innovative. I guess that works for me now, not being too hard in my selfcritique and just doing things if I feel like at the moment that I feel them.
Needless to say that not everyone will become a true innovator over the years and with all the practice in the world.
well, actually i like to try every style... if i see some new style, I'll definitely would to try it.. after i try it.. I'll be putting it my own as "i liked to do what i like" in it.. then... i started to explores again and again.. which definitely will come as my own style ...

Great read...I've been an Illustrator, Designer, Visualization Artist and Painter for the past 20 years...it's difficult to keep your creativity up all the time, especially when you have a real job doing some design you find boring. Looking at other artist's work diffinately inspires me all the time. This is the best site I've ever seen for that...sometimes you can get inspired from a different artist's style and twist some of it into yours; but never copy!

I definitely agree with you there. dA has always been an inspiration for me. It's also kept me afresh of the latest design trends and what/not. It's been and continues to be an exciting journey for me getting back to my art. Thanks for the comments. I really do appreciate it.
